The air in the forgotten crypt hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from dust, decay, and the ghosts of ages past. Silas, his face a mask of grim determination, held the flickering torch high, its meager light struggling to push back the encroaching darkness. I followed close behind, my own breath catching in my throat, a knot of apprehension tightening with every step deeper into the earth’s embrace. This was it, the heart of the ancient rite, the place where the whispers of my lineage finally coalesced into a tangible, terrifying truth.
“Are you certain this is the place, Silas?” My voice, barely a tremor, felt swallowed by the oppressive silence. The stone walls seemed to hum with a latent energy, a power that prickled my skin and sent a shiver down my spine. It was a sensation I was becoming all too familiar with, this unsettling awareness of forces beyond my comprehension.
Silas paused, his keen eyes scanning the intricate carvings that adorned the sarcophagi lining the chamber. “The texts were explicit, Alex. The Serpent’s Coil, where the bloodline’s strength is renewed and its secrets safeguarded. This is as close as we’ll get.” He gestured with the torch towards a massive stone altar at the far end of the crypt, its surface stained with an unfathomable hue. “The ritual requires more than just proximity, though. It requires… a willing vessel.”
