The Serpent's Coil

The air hung thick and wet, a suffocating blanket that clung to skin like a second, grimy uniform. Every breath felt like swallowing swamp water, and the constant hum of unseen insects was the jungle’s ceaseless, maddening song. This was the Serpent’s Coil, they called it, and it felt like the very throat of damnation. We’d been dropped in with the dawn, a creeping, grey light that did little to dispel the oppressive gloom. The mission was simple on paper, a word that felt like a cruel joke out here: secure a ridge that overlooked a vital supply route. Simple. Right.

Sergeant Miller barked orders, his voice a gravelly rasp that somehow cut through the jungle’s din. “Riley! Keep your eyes peeled! This ain’t no parade ground!” He shoved a canteen into my hand, its metal cool against my sweat-slicked palm. “Water’s your best friend out here, kid. Don’t let it run dry.” His eyes, usually hard as flint, held a flicker of something that might have been concern, or maybe just the grim understanding of what lay ahead.

Corporal Davies, bless his goofy heart, was trying to crack a joke, his voice a little too loud, a little too forced. “Hey, Riley, heard they’re serving steak back home. Wonder if they got any left for us when we get back, eh?” He winked, but his eyes darted around, betraying the nervous energy that crackled through the platoon. I managed a weak smile, trying to push down the knot of fear that had taken up permanent residence in my gut. The jungle pressed in on all sides, a wall of emerald green that seemed to breathe and watch. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. My M-16 felt heavy, an extension of my own trembling limbs, yet somehow inadequate against the vastness of this place.
