A Flicker of Hope
Amidst the despair, a shared laugh with Davies or a moment of unexpected aid from Medic Rostova rekindles Riley's resolve. He finds renewed purpose in protecting his brothers.
The jungle pressed in, a suffocating green blanket that stole the air and choked the light. Every rustle of leaves, every unseen snap of a twig, was a jolt to my nerves. Sergeant Miller’s words, “Keep your head down, Riley, and your eyes open,” echoed in my mind, but my eyes were wide, darting, trying to make sense of the alien world that had swallowed us whole. The air hung thick and humid, a constant, cloying embrace that clung to my skin like a second uniform, slick with sweat and fear. Bugs, fat and iridescent, buzzed with a relentless hum, a soundtrack to our slow, agonizing march.
Davies, bless his perpetually grinning face, nudged me with his elbow. “Hey, rookie. You look like you’re about to sprout roots. You gonna become one with the foliage?”
I managed a weak smile, the corners of my mouth feeling stiff and unfamiliar. “Just… admiring the scenery, Davies.”
