Chapter 4
The Loner's Burden
Ragnar grapples with the artifact's power and his own unsettling visions. He fears his instincts and the possibility that his connection to the past is a curse, not a guide, isolating him further.
The weight of the obsidian shard pressed into Ragnar’s palm, a cold, alien sensation against his calloused skin. It pulsed, not with heat, but with a deep thrum that resonated through his bones, a bass note to the frantic symphony of his own heartbeat. The fragmented visions, usually a chaotic storm of snarling maws and crimson streaks, had coalesced around the artifact. Images flickered at the edges of his sight, too quick to grasp, yet leaving behind a residue of gnawing unease. He saw hands, ancient and gnarled, cradling the shard. He saw eyes, burning with a light that was neither sun nor moon. And he felt a tremor, a vast, ancient sorrow that seemed to emanate from the very earth beneath his paws.
He retreated deeper into the shadowed embrace of the ancient woods, the canopy a dense tapestry that filtered the encroaching dawn into muted, gray shafts. His own instincts, usually a beacon in the wilderness, felt muffled, distorted. The familiar scent of pine and damp earth was overlaid with something else, something sharp and metallic, the phantom tang of blood that had long since dried. He shook his head, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Was this a gift? This unsettling clarity that pierced the fog of his fractured memories? Or was it a curse, designed to draw him, to ensnare him in a web spun by forces he couldn’t comprehend?
He ran a thumb over the shard’s smooth, cool surface. It was impossibly old, older than the oldest trees, older than the mountains that scraped the sky. He had found it nestled amongst the roots of a fallen oak, its dark gleam a stark contrast to the mossy earth. The moment his fingers brushed against it, the visions had intensified, a torrent of images and emotions flooding his mind. He saw himself, not as he was now, a solitary hunter, but as part of a roaring tide, a creature of raw, untamed fury. He saw the glint of silver, the flash of fangs, the desperate, primal dance of life and death. And woven through it all, a single, recurring thread: the obsidian shard, a silent witness.
