Chapter 11
The Scarred Past
Ragnar's visions become clearer, revealing a pivotal event involving the artifact and a shadowy entity. He confronts the painful memories of his pack's past and his own role in the ancient conflicts.
The air tasted of damp earth and forgotten sorrows. Ragnar knelt, the rough bark of the ancient oak a familiar sting against his calloused palms. The forest, usually a sanctuary, felt heavy, pregnant with a history he was only just beginning to decipher. The visions, once fleeting and chaotic, now coalesced with a terrifying clarity. They were not mere echoes of battles past, but a visceral reliving of moments, sharp and agonizing as fresh wounds.
He saw it again: the glint of moonlight on obsidian, the unnatural stillness of the air just before the storm broke. The artifact. It pulsed with a sickly, internal light, nestled in the gnarled roots of this very tree, or one that stood in its place millennia ago. It was a thing of terrible beauty, carved from a stone that seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it, etched with symbols that writhed and shifted as he watched. And then, the shadow. Not a creature of flesh and blood, but a void, an absence that bled into reality, tendrils of darkness reaching, grasping, twisting the very fabric of the world.
He remembered the scent of fear, thick and cloying, not just his own, but the primal terror of his kin. He saw faces, blurred and indistinct now, but the emotions were stark: desperation, rage, a profound, bone-deep grief. And his own role. He was there. He had held the artifact, or sought to protect it, or perhaps… perhaps he had been a pawn. The memories were a tapestry woven with threads of betrayal and sacrifice, and he was at its center, a figure both heroic and damning.
