Chapter 8
The World's Scorn
They emerge into a world that fears Kael. Whispers follow them, eyes filled with terror and hatred. Lyra shields him, her protective instincts awakened, much to her own confusion.

Eyes, wide and darting, fixed on Kael, and then flickered away, as if burned by his very presence. Lyra felt a surge of something akin to protectiveness, a fierce, unexpected instinct that coiled in her gut. It was a sensation so foreign, so utterly at odds with the icy resolve she had nurtured for years, that it momentarily stole her breath.
