The clang of iron against stone echoed through the cavern, a sound that should have been a death knell for Kael, but instead, it was the prelude to his liberation. Lyra’s hands, calloused from years of wielding a hunter’s blade, trembled as she worked the final lock. It was rusted, ancient, a testament to the centuries Kael had endured this subterranean tomb. Each click of the mechanism felt like a betrayal of everything she’d been taught, a violent severing of the ties that bound her to the Order. She was the last Ashbourne, a hunter forged in the fires of vengeance, and here she was, dismantling the cage of the very demon she was sworn to destroy.

The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and something metallic – Kael’s blood, she realized with a jolt – seemed to hold its breath. When the last tumbler yielded, the heavy chains around Kael’s wrists and ankles fell away with a deafening clatter. He didn’t move immediately. He simply sat there, a figure carved from shadow and pain, his crimson eyes, no longer dulled by despair, now fixed on her with an unnerving intensity. There was no triumphant roar, no surge of demonic power, only a profound stillness, as if the release had momentarily stunned him.

Lyra’s own breath hitched. She had expected fury, or at the very least, a primal urge to flee. Instead, Kael slowly, deliberately, raised a hand, flexing fingers that had been bound for so long they seemed unfamiliar with freedom. The skin was pale, almost translucent, marred by deep gouges and the faint, silvery scars of old wounds. He looked less like a fearsome demon and more like a man pushed to the absolute brink of his endurance.
