The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and metallic that clung to Kael's skin like a second shadow. Lyra watched him, her hand instinctively hovering near the hilt of her blade, even though the chains that had bound him for centuries lay shattered on the stone floor. The pact pulsed between them, a silent, thrumming current that had irrevocably altered the course of her life.

He was no longer the broken prisoner she had found, but the demon king, his power a palpable force that seemed to warp the very air around him. Yet, beneath the resurgence of his might, Lyra still saw the weariness, the profound loneliness that had etched itself into the lines around his crimson eyes. Those eyes. They had been the focus of her hatred for so long, the embodiment of her loss. Now, they were a source of a bewildering fascination.

“The Order will not stop,” Kael said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in Lyra’s chest. “They will hunt us. They will not rest until both our heads are on their pikes.”
