The stone of the dungeon was cold, a familiar chill that had seeped into Lyra’s bones over the years. It was a cold that spoke of death, of finality, of the end of all things. But tonight, it felt different. Tonight, the cold was a prelude to something else entirely. It was the chill before a storm, before the world tilted on its axis and revealed its true, ugly face.

She stood before the chains, before the figure bound within them, and the air thrummed with a tension that had nothing to do with the ancient magic holding him captive. It was the tension of a precipice, of a choice that would carve a new path through her life, or shatter the one she had known. Her hand, calloused from the hilt of her blade, hovered inches from the lock. The Order’s teachings, ingrained deeper than any scar, screamed at her. *End him. He is the blight. He is the darkness.*

But the young man shackled before her was not the monster of her nightmares. His hair, the colour of midnight, fell across a brow etched with pain, not malice. His skin, pale as moonlight, was marred by the cruel marks of his confinement, but even in his weakened state, a raw, potent beauty clung to him. And his eyes… his eyes were the colour of spilled blood, yes, but they held a depth that spoke of centuries of suffering, not an insatiable hunger. They were the eyes of a prisoner, not a predator.
