The stale air of Kael’s prison clung to Lyra like a second skin, a suffocating shroud woven from centuries of despair. Each breath was a reminder of the lies she had lived, the venomous truths that had been so carefully cultivated within her. The Order. Her Order. The very foundation of her existence, the beacon that had guided her through the desolate landscape of her orphaned childhood, was crumbling around her, grain by grain.

She traced the rough, cold stone of the wall with a fingertip, the texture a stark contrast to the smooth, polished surfaces of the Order’s halls. Those halls, once imbued with the sacred aura of purpose, now felt hollow, echoing with the hollowness of her own heart. They had painted Kael Vireon as a creature of pure malice, a blight upon the land, the embodiment of all that was dark and wicked. His crimson eyes, the very ones that had haunted her nightmares, were meant to be the mark of his unspeakable evil. But seeing them now, not burning with infernal rage, but dulled by pain and a profound weariness, had shattered that image into a million irreparable shards.

He lay on a pallet of straw, his body a tapestry of ancient scars and fresh wounds. The chains that had bound him, thick as a man’s wrist, lay discarded nearby, their cruel purpose fulfilled. Yet, the invisible chains of his curse, of his isolation, seemed to bind him even tighter. He had spoken of his imprisonment, of the Order’s manipulation, of a truth so twisted it was unrecognizable. He had pleaded not for mercy, but for understanding. And Lyra, the hunter born to end him, had listened.
