Rumors of war intensify. The Order prepares for a conflict, their true motives yet hidden. Lyra and Kael realize they must prepare too, their survival depending on their united strength.

The wind, a restless phantom, clawed at the tattered banners of the Order’s fortress. It shrieked through arrow slits and moaned around parapets, carrying with it the scent of distant rain and something far more unsettling: the metallic tang of fear. Lyra, her hand resting, almost unconsciously, on the hilt of her blade, stood by a high window, gazing out at the bruised twilight sky. The usual crisp, disciplined air of the Order’s stronghold felt thick, heavy with unspoken anxieties.

“They’re mobilizing,” Kael’s voice, a low rumble from behind her, cut through the oppressive silence. He was seated by the hearth, the firelight playing across the planes of his face, softening the harsh angles that still, after all this time, managed to snag her breath. The chains were gone, replaced by the subtler, more insidious bonds of their blood pact, but the ghost of them seemed to linger, a shadow in his posture, a weariness in his eyes.

Lyra didn’t turn. “I know.” The words were a mere whisper, lost in the wind’s lament. She’d heard the hushed conversations in the corridors, the hurried footsteps of guards, the clatter of armor being readied. The Order, always vigilant, was now vibrating with a frantic, almost desperate energy.
