The air in the hidden chamber was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and ancient that clung to Kael like a second skin. Lyra sat opposite him, the dying embers of the fire casting dancing shadows that did little to soften the harsh angles of his face. For hours, they had spoken in fragments, whispers against the oppressive silence. Now, a different kind of quiet settled, one heavy with unspoken truths.

“They told you I was a monster,” Kael’s voice was a low murmur, rough as worn stone. He traced a pattern on the flagstone floor with a fingertip, his gaze fixed on the intricate lines. “They said I reveled in destruction, that my eyes burned with an insatiable hunger for chaos.”

Lyra watched him, her hand instinctively resting on the hilt of her blade, a habit ingrained deeper than bone. Yet, the tightness in her chest had begun to loosen, the sharp edges of her hatred blunted by the weary resignation in his tone. This was not the bloodthirsty fiend of her nightmares, the architect of her clan’s annihilation. This was a man, broken and bound.
