Chapter 11
The Order's Shadow
The Order actively hunts them, their agents relentless. Lyra recognizes their tactics, their cruelty. She sees the true face of the enemy, and it is not Kael's.
The biting wind whipped Lyra’s cloak around her, a familiar sting against her cheeks that did little to cool the fire in her gut. They were coming. She could feel it, a prickling awareness that had been honed over years of tracking and survival. The Order, her Order, was on their heels. She’d seen the signs – the unnaturally quiet forests, the way the birds had ceased their songs, the sudden, chilling stillness that descended like a shroud. It was the same pattern she’d witnessed countless times before, the prelude to a hunt, or worse, a purge.
Kael moved beside her, his steps unnervingly silent despite the rough terrain. He was a shadow, a creature of the night, and Lyra found herself constantly glancing at him, half expecting him to dissolve into the gloom. But he remained solid, his presence a heavy weight against the swirling mist that clung to the mountainside. His blood-red eyes, once the beacon of her vengeance, now held a different kind of intensity – a sharp alertness, a primal understanding of the danger that stalked them. He knew the Order’s methods, their ruthlessness, perhaps even better than she did.
“They’re closer than I thought,” Kael murmured, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very rock beneath their feet. He didn’t need to say who ‘they’ were. The air thrummed with the unspoken threat.
