Chapter 10
Echoes of the Past
Lyra revisits the ruins of her clan, seeking answers. The Order's actions seem increasingly suspicious. She begins to understand that her clan's destruction was not what it seemed.
The air at the Ashbourne ancestral grounds was thick with the ghosts of memory, a suffocating blanket woven from sorrow and unspoken rage. Lyra moved through the skeletal remains of her home with a practiced, yet heavy, tread. Each fallen stone, each blackened timber, was a testament to the night that had irrevocably fractured her existence. The Order had decreed this place a sacred, sorrowful shrine, a constant reminder of the demon’s cruelty and the righteous path she walked. But as Lyra’s fingers traced the scorch marks on a once-proud hearth, a different truth began to whisper through the ruins.
She had come here seeking clarity, a desperate attempt to reconcile the visceral hatred that had fueled her for so long with the unsettling reality of Kael Vireon. The image of him, chained and vulnerable, his crimson eyes holding not malice but a profound weariness, had lodged itself in her mind, a persistent splinter. The Order’s narrative was simple, absolute: the Blood Eyed Demon was pure evil, a harbinger of destruction. Yet, Kael had not moved to kill her, had not even seemed to relish her presence. He had simply endured.
Lyra knelt by a shattered mosaic, its once vibrant depiction of the Ashbourne lineage now a jumbled mess of fractured tiles. Her mother’s face, frozen in a serene smile, was disfigured by a jagged crack. A low moan escaped Lyra’s lips. She remembered her mother’s laugh, the warmth of her hand, the scent of herbs that clung to her. All gone. Wiped away by the crimson tide.
