Lyra watched the last of the lanterns flicker out from her perch on the hill, her hand resting loosely on the cool grass. Beside her, Silas sat in that quiet way of his, his stillness a kind of language she had learned to read. He wasn't tense—not exactly. But there was a hum beneath his calm, a vigilance that never quite switched off.

She reached over and laced her fingers through his. His skin was cool, as always, but she had long stopped noticing the temperature difference. It was just him. Just Silas.

"We should go down," she said, though she made no move to rise. The valley below was a patchwork of faint shadows and pale moonlight, the sanctuary a solid, breathing thing at its heart. She had grown to love this view—the way the world looked small from up here, the way the trouble felt distant.
