The air in the cavern was thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and ancient, like blood spilled on stone millennia ago. It clung to my throat, a bitter precursor to the final act. For weeks, months, I had chased whispers, followed phantom trails, and stared down the maw of despair, all for this moment. The Altar of the Forgotten King. It wasn't grand, not in the way a king's tomb might be. It was a rough-hewn slab of obsidian, scarred by time and, I suspected, by more than just the elements. And upon it, nestled in a depression that seemed to weep shadow, lay the Blade of the Forgotten King.

It was not what I expected, or perhaps it was precisely what I had imagined in the fevered dreams that had haunted my sleep. It was long, impossibly so, its dark metal seeming to absorb the meager light filtering in from the cracks above. No jewels adorned its hilt, no intricate carvings spoke of masterful craftsmanship. It was raw, primal, a weapon forged not for beauty but for purpose, a purpose that now hummed with a power I could feel vibrating through the very soles of my worn boots. It called to me, a siren song of strength, of vindication, of a chance to erase the shame that had clung to me like a shroud since that day.

But I was not alone.
