The scent of rain-dampened earth and something else, something wild and intoxicating, clung to Jillian’s clothes. It was the lingering perfume of Lucian, a phantom embrace that followed her even when he was gone. She’d walked home from their last meeting, a twilight stroll through the park that had stretched into unnerving darkness, her mind a tangled mess of fascination and a nascent tremor of disquiet. The city lights, usually a comforting tapestry, seemed to blur and shift, their edges softened by a haze she couldn't quite place.

Back in her small apartment, the silence was a stark contrast to the vibrant hum of Lucian’s presence. The keys she habitually kept in a ceramic bowl by the door were found hanging on the hook, a place she never used. She’d dismissed it as absentmindedness, a consequence of her increasingly distracted state. Lucian’s gaze, his low, resonant voice, his unnerving stillness – they occupied too much of her mental real estate for trivialities like remembering where she’d put her keys.
