Chapter 16
A Test of Will
Jillian faces a crucial test. She must harness her resilience and newfound knowledge to resist Lucian's powerful allure and possessiveness, or succumb to the seductive darkness he offers.
The air in Jillian’s small apartment felt thick, weighted with unspoken words and the lingering scent of night-blooming jasmine that Lucian favored. Jillian’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Her hands, clenched at her sides, trembled. She had spent the last few days wrestling with the revelation, the impossible reality of his existence. Her friend, Sarah, had been a whirlwind of concern, her questions sharp and pointed, each one a tiny needle pricking at the carefully constructed facade Jillian had tried to maintain. Her family, too, had called, their voices tinged with worry at her sudden withdrawal. But the call she truly dreaded, the one that echoed with an ancient, compelling power, was Lucian’s. And she had answered it, drawn by a force she could no longer deny, nor entirely comprehend.
