Chapter 6
A Mask of Normalcy
To cope, Stephanie Jo learns to present a facade of normalcy at school and to the outside world. Knowing what her life was like at home. Not being able to talk to anyone about what was happening ,she was afraid to say a word. Afraid to tell her mom. Her father had put a threading fear in her. Trying to make her feel it was all her fault some how
The Louisiana sun, a relentless, buttery orb, beat down on the asphalt playground, turning the air into a shimmering haze. For Stephanie Jo, this was the battleground of normalcy, a place where she meticulously constructed a façade, brick by careful brick, until it stood strong and unyielding. Inside the school walls, a world away from the suffocating silence of her home, she learned to wear a mask. It was a masterpiece of childhood art, painted with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes and a demeanor so placid it bordered on the ethereal.
She was a phantom in the bustling hallways, a whisper in the cacophony of school bells and boisterous laughter. Her report cards spoke of a bright, quiet student, attentive and polite. Teachers praised her diligence, her gentle nature, her uncanny ability to blend into the background, never causing a ripple. They saw a child, perhaps a little shy, a little too serious for her age, but otherwise, a picture of innocent childhood. They didn’t see the war she waged daily, the constant vigilance, the seismic effort it took to simply *be* normal.
At home, the air was thick with unspoken things, a miasma of dread that clung to her like the humid Louisiana air. Her father’s presence was a heavy cloak, suffocating and chilling all at once. His words, laced with a venom she was too young to fully comprehend but too old to ignore, were a constant drumbeat of fear. He had a way of twisting things, of making her feel small and wrong, as if the very air she breathed was an inconvenience to him. He’d planted seeds of shame in her young mind, whispering that this was her fault, that she somehow invited the darkness. And the fear, a cold, sharp shard, had lodged itself deep within her, preventing any words from escaping her lips.
