The Louisiana heat, once a comforting blanket, now felt like a suffocating shroud. Stephanie Jo, barely old enough to tie her own shoes, carried a weight that no child should ever bear. Her small body, still filled with the wonder of a world yet to unfold, was becoming a battleground, a place of constant fear and bewildering pain. It was a silent war waged within the walls of her own home, a place that was supposed to be a sanctuary.
Her father. The word itself, once synonymous with strength and protection, had curdled into something dark and terrifying. The man who tucked her in at night, who told her stories of brave knights and faraway lands, was also the man who inflicted wounds that went deeper than any skin could show. The confusion was a constant companion, a knot in her stomach that tightened with every stolen glance, every hushed command, every touch that felt wrong. She didn’t have the words to name what was happening, only the visceral understanding that it was a secret, a terrible secret that belonged only to them.
Each day was a tightrope walk. She learned to read the subtle shifts in his mood, to anticipate the storm before it broke. Her innocence was a fragile thing, chipped away piece by piece, replaced by a hypervigilance that stole her childhood. Laughter became a rare, guarded sound, quickly stifled. Playtime was a distant memory, replaced by a constant, gnawing anxiety. Her world shrank to the confines of their small house, and within those walls, she was a prisoner.
