The humid air hung thick and heavy, a blanket woven from the scent of magnolias and the damp earth of Louisiana. Stephanie Jo, a wisp of a child with eyes too wide for her tender years, carried a burden that no child should ever know. The world, once a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and innocent laughter, had begun to warp, its edges blurred by a creeping shadow she couldn't yet name. It was a secret that lodged itself deep within her small chest, a stone that grew heavier with each passing day.

Her earliest memories were a confusing tapestry. There were the bright, sun-drenched afternoons spent chasing fireflies in the sprawling backyard, the sticky sweetness of watermelon dripping down her chin, the comforting rhythm of her mother humming in the kitchen. These were the moments that glittered, the ones her young mind clung to like precious jewels. But beneath this veneer of childhood bliss, a disquiet was taking root. It was in the hushed tones of her parents’ arguments, the way her father’s eyes would sometimes linger on her with an unnerving intensity, the sudden, sharp sting of his hand when she didn’t meet his expectations.

At three, four, perhaps even younger, the world began to fracture. The innocence of a child's understanding was a fragile thing, easily shattered. Stephanie Jo tried to make sense of the confusing, frightening acts that began to intrude upon her world. Her father, the man who was supposed to be her protector, her anchor, became a source of terror. The warmth of his embrace, once a sanctuary, now held a chilling undercurrent. His touch, which should have been gentle and loving, became something else entirely – something that made her skin crawl and her stomach clench with a fear she couldn't articulate.
