The humid Louisiana air, thick with the scent of magnolias and damp earth, had always been a familiar comfort to Stephanie. Even as a child, she’d found solace in the way the summer heat wrapped around her like a warm blanket, a stark contrast to the chilling fear that often resided within the walls of her home.
