The morning came with the gray light of Vilnius pressing through the thin curtains, and Klisto lay still, tracing the crack in the ceiling that had become a familiar map. The word norfa hung in the air like a half-remembered song—the name of the small shop down the street, the one with the flickering sign and the old woman who always gave them a bruised apple for free. Norfa, and the other one, Iki, two stores that smelled of soap and sour bread and the particular dampness of poverty that clung to everything like a second skin.
Klisto had been thinking about the numbers again. Not the ones from school, the clean and orderly gradients that slid down chalkboards like water over stones. No, these were different. These were the numbers of survival, the ones that lived in the cracks of their mother's hands as she counted out coins on the kitchen table, her lips moving in a silent litany of subtraction.
The math of the poor was not a gradient. It was a cliff.
