The air in their small cottage, once filled with the sweet scent of honeysuckle and Kael’s earnest pronouncements of love, now held a faint, acrid tang. It was the smell of unspoken words, of hurt feelings left to fester, a miasma that seemed to emanate from the very corners of their home. Elara traced the rim of her earthenware mug, the warmth of the herbal tea doing little to soothe the chill that had settled deep within her. Kael sat across from her, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames in the hearth, his usual easy posture replaced by a rigid tension.

It had started innocuously enough, a simple misunderstanding about a shared task. Kael had promised to mend the fence bordering their small garden, a task Elara had been eagerly anticipating, knowing it would protect their precious herbs from the foraging night creatures. But when she’d returned from visiting her mother, the fence remained in disarray, the wood splintered and leaning precariously. Kael, when questioned, had seemed dismissive, his words laced with a weariness that pricked at Elara’s heart.

“I was helping Elder Lysander with the harvest,” he’d said, his voice lacking its usual warmth. “The fence can wait.”
