The prison’s administrative office was a cramped, fluorescent-lit room that smelled of stale coffee and paper dust. Sterling Vance stood before the counter, his petition clutched in his hand like a lifeline. The guard who had escorted him, a heavyset man with a bored expression, leaned against the wall and watched without interest.
“I need this filed with the Family Justice Council,” Sterling said, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hand. “It’s urgent. The appeal hearing is in three days.”
The clerk, a woman with thin lips and glasses perched low on her nose, took the petition without glancing at it. She slid it into a tray marked “Outgoing – Administrative.” “It’ll be processed by the end of the week,” she said flatly.
