The work camp was a flat, gray world under an endless, pale sky. Elara’s hands were raw and blistered from hauling stones from one pile to another, then back again. The guards stood on raised platforms, their rifles slung lazily, watching with the same disinterest they showed toward the clouds. The other inmates moved like ghosts, their faces hollow, their eyes tracking every sign of weakness.

Elara had been there for three days. Each morning began before dawn with a shrill whistle that tore her from a sleep that was never deep enough. The bunks were hard metal frames with thin mattresses that smelled of mildew and sweat. The food was a gray paste that tasted of nothing. She ate it because she had to. For Leo. For Lina. For the chance to prove her innocence.

But the other inmates were the worst part. They had made her a target from the first moment. A woman named Greer, tall and scarred, had cornered Elara in the washroom on the second night. “You’re the one who killed her husband,” Greer had hissed, her breath sour. “High and mighty, think you’re better than us.”
