Kai's protective instincts are tested as Anya is exposed to the station's influence. Her latent sensitivities begin to manifest, blurring the lines between reality and the horrifying visions.
The metallic tang of recycled air had always been a comfort to Anya, a constant in the vast, indifferent vacuum. Now, it felt like a shroud, heavy and suffocating. She clutched the datapad, its smooth surface cool against her clammy palms, the flickering holographic schematics of the derelict station an inadequate shield against the encroaching dread. It wasn't just the silence that gnawed at her; it was the *quality* of it. A silence that felt less like an absence of sound and more like a deliberate holding of breath, as if the very structure of the station was listening, waiting.
“Anything, Anya?” Kai’s voice, low and raspy, cut through the oppressive stillness. They were a shadow in her periphery, their usual restless energy subdued, replaced by a coiled tension that Anya recognized with a pang of guilt. She was the reason for it.
Anya shook her head, her gaze fixed on the schematics. “Nothing concrete. Just… dead ends. Maintenance tunnels that don’t connect, power conduits that lead nowhere. It’s like the station was deliberately sabotaged, not just abandoned.” Her fingers traced a particularly complex junction, a knot of intersecting lines that seemed to mock her efforts. “And the comms array is fried. Completely. Not a whisper getting in or out.”
