The air inside the *Stardust Drifter* had grown thick with unspoken dread. Captain Eva Rostova, her gaze fixed on the flickering console before her, felt it pressing in, a physical weight against her chest. The derelict station, a skeletal silhouette against the star-dusted black, offered no comfort, only a chilling silence that had swallowed the last vestiges of their hope. They were here, adrift in the cold, and their contact, the enigmatic “Cipher,” was nowhere to be found.
“Anything, ZO?” Eva’s voice was a low murmur, carefully modulated to project a calm she didn’t feel.
ZO Sharma, hunched over his own terminal, ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. His eyes, usually bright with an engineer’s inquisitive spark, were now shadowed with a growing fear. “Nothing, Captain. No life signs, no energy signatures beyond residual power. It’s… dead. Utterly dead.” He sounded hollow, the words echoing the emptiness that had permeated the station’s vast, silent corridors.
