The viewport, once a comforting expanse of starlight, now offered only a smeared canvas of oppressive, bruised purple. Eva gripped the armrest of her command chair, the worn synth-leather cool beneath her clammy palms. The *Stardust Drifter* shuddered, a deep, resonant groan that vibrated through the deck plates and into her bones. Each tremor was a fresh stab of anxiety, a reminder of how fragile their existence had become. The station, a skeletal ruin against the void, loomed closer, its silence a suffocating shroud.

"Status report, Kai," Eva’s voice was a low rasp, carefully modulated to project a calm she didn’t feel.

Kai’s fingers danced across the console, their usual sharp precision slightly dulled by the tension radiating from their posture. "Shields are at fifty percent, Captain. Hull integrity is… fluctuating. That last energy surge did a number on us. We’re limping." Their voice, usually laced with a dry wit, was tight. "Navigation is still a mess. The station’s interference is like static in my brain."
