She retreats into the familiar darkness, seeking solace in the predictable pain of her isolation, believing it’s the only true safety she can find.

The air in my small apartment, usually a sanctuary, felt thick and suffocating. Each breath I took was shallow, a desperate gasp against an unseen pressure. It had been days since I’d last seen Liam, days of meticulously avoiding his calls, his texts, his very existence. My fingers hovered over my comm unit, a phantom limb twitching with the urge to respond, to explain, but the words choked in my throat. What could I even say? *“Sorry, I’m retreating back into my shell because your kindness terrifies me”?* It sounded pathetic, even to my own ears, and yet, it was the raw, ugly truth.

The warmth I’d started to feel, that tentative thawing of the ice around my heart, had curdled into a sharp, icy dread. It felt like a cruel trick, a preview of a joy that was destined to be snatched away. My mind, a relentless architect of disaster, had begun rebuilding the walls, thicker and higher than before. Liam’s steady presence, his quiet strength, had been a balm, but now it felt like a vulnerability. A soft whisper in the face of a coming storm. And I was convinced the storm was coming.

It always did.
