The air in the woods had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken fear that clung to them like the damp moss on the ancient oaks. Each snapped twig, each rustle of unseen leaves, sent a fresh wave of unease through the remaining four. Liam, his brow furrowed, traced a symbol etched into the bark of a gnarled beech tree. It was the same symbol they’d seen scrawled on the back of the tattered map, the one that had led them deeper into this suffocating silence.
“It’s no good,” Maya whispered, her voice barely disturbing the stillness. Her eyes darted nervously between the dense foliage and Liam’s determined face. “We’ve been walking in circles. Noah and Chloe… they could be anywhere. Or worse.” The unspoken word hung between them, a phantom limb of their missing companions.
Ethan, his jaw set, scanned the trees, his gaze sharp and unwavering. He gripped a sturdy branch, his knuckles white. “We have to keep looking. We can’t just give up.” His protective instincts, usually a silent anchor, now thrummed with a desperate urgency. He risked a glance at Chloe’s vacant spot beside him, the absence a physical ache.
