The air in the crumbling temple thrummed with an energy that prickled the skin, a palpable tension that coiled in the pit of Lillian’s stomach. Dust motes, thick as snow, danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gaping maw of the ceiling, illuminating a tableau of desecration and forgotten power. Before them, on a raised dais carved from obsidian, pulsed the treasure. It wasn't gold, nor jewels, but an artifact of swirling, incandescent darkness, a captured void that seemed to drink the very light from the chamber.
Maya’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the oppressive silence. "Lillian, this… this isn't what we thought. This is wrong." Her voice, usually a steady anchor, trembled.
Noah, for once, was speechless, his usual bravado deflated. His eyes, wide and unblinking, were fixed on the artifact, a strange mixture of awe and terror warring within him. The whispers of ancient power, the promise of untold riches, had led them here, but the reality was a suffocating dread.
