Maya, ever practical, clutched a heavy, chipped stone, her knuckles white. Noah, his earlier bravado long since evaporated, shifted his weight nervously, his eyes darting between the grotesque carvings on the walls and the shadowed recesses of the chamber. Chloe, pale and trembling, clung to Ethan’s arm, her gaze fixed on something only she seemed to perceive in the gloom. Alex, as always, stood apart, a silhouette of silent menace.
The revelation of the treasure’s true nature had been a brutal blow.
