The air in the hidden alcove of the abandoned observatory was thick with the scent of damp stone and forgotten starlight. I traced the constellations etched into the crumbling plaster, the familiar patterns a faint comfort against the gnawing unease that had become my constant companion. It had been days since I’d fled Eldoria, days of scrounging for meager meals and sleeping in the hollows of ancient trees, the whispers in my mind growing louder, more insistent, like a tide threatening to break its banks.
My fingers brushed against a loose stone, and with a soft grating sound, it shifted. Curiosity, a trait that had led me into this mess and now seemed my only remaining guide, compelled me to push. The stone gave way, revealing a narrow passage, plunging into darkness. A breath of cool, dry air, carrying a faint, metallic tang, wafted out. It felt… different. Not the oppressive stillness of Eldoria’s forbidden halls, but a vibrant, expectant silence.
Hesitantly, I squeezed through the opening, my heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against my ribs. The passage widened into a small, circular chamber. Unlike the observatory above, this space was meticulously maintained. Shelves lined the walls, filled with scrolls tied with faded ribbons and books bound in leather so dark it seemed to absorb the faint light. In the center of the room, a simple wooden table held a single, intricately carved wooden box.
