The air in Master Lorien’s study was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else… something metallic and sharp, like a freshly drawn blade. I’d come seeking clarification, an explanation for the growing unease that had settled in my bones like a persistent chill. Lorien had promised answers after the revelation of the conspiracy, a confession that had left me reeling. But the answers he offered were not the ones I’d anticipated. They were laced with a bitterness that coated my tongue, a betrayal so profound it felt like a physical blow.

“You trusted me, Elara,” Lorien’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of its usual warmth, “and I… I failed you.”

He stood by the tall, arched window, his back to me, silhouetted against the twilight sky. The light caught the silver threads in his hair, making him seem ancient and weary. I stepped further into the room, my footsteps unnervingly loud on the polished oak floor. “Failed me? Master Lorien, what are you saying? You spoke of the Shadow Broker, of the seals… of my part in this.”
