The air in the cavern hung thick with a palpable dread, a miasma of forgotten fear that clawed at my throat. It was a sensation I knew intimately, though here it was amplified, a thousandfold echo of the existential terror that had driven me from Earth. The Goddess had spoken of a nexus, a place where the Hollow King’s power coalesced, and I’d found it. This wasn’t a physical fortress, but a wound in reality, a gaping maw where history itself had been devoured.
My Chronicle Engine hummed, not with its usual steady thrum, but with a frantic, desperate pulse. The faint shimmer of past events, usually a gentle cascade, was here a raging torrent, a chaotic storm of erased moments. I could see flashes – a king’s decree, a child’s laughter, a lover’s whisper – all ripped from existence, leaving behind only this gnawing void. This was the heart of the Oblivion, the King’s unholy throne.
“This is it, isn’t it?” I muttered, my voice raspy. The Goddess stood beside me, her form even more ethereal than usual, as if the very air of this place was stealing her substance.
