The air in the chamber, once thick with the Goddess’s ethereal presence, now felt thin, brittle. It was as if the very walls were sighing, their ancient stone weary of the silence. I stood before the shimmering portal, the gateway back to the familiar dust and dim lighting of my museum basement, and a knot of apprehension tightened in my gut. The Goddess had spoken of the Hollow King, of his insatiable hunger for history, but her words had been cloaked in the sorrow of a dying world. Now, with the portal humming, a tangible promise of escape, the true horror of her tale began to sink in.
“He is not merely a king, Leo Vance,” the Goddess’s voice, a fragile whisper now, echoed in my mind. “He is the architect of erasure. He crafts oblivion, not from malice, but from a primal, all-consuming dread.”
I blinked, the concept jarring. “Dread? Of what?”
