The days following the vanishing act were steeped in a quiet bewilderment. Amy found herself tracing the edges of Mrs. Becker's familiar routines, a subtle hum of unanswered questions vibrating beneath the surface of their shared meals and evening stories. The scent of wild roses, once a promise of jam and comfort, now carried a phantom echo of something far more ephemeral. She’d return to the woods, not with the eager anticipation of discovery, but with a quiet, almost melancholic hope. The mossy path was still there, a verdant ribbon winding into the trees, but it led only to the ordinary, the expected. The magic, it seemed, had been a fleeting guest, a secret whispered and then withdrawn.

"Will I ever find it again?" Amy asked one afternoon, her voice barely a breath against the rustle of leaves. She sat on the porch swing, her gaze fixed on the dark, inviting edge of the forest.

Mrs. Becker, her hands busy with mending a worn apron, paused. Her eyes, usually so clear and steady, held a hint of that same unspoken wonder. "Perhaps," she said softly, her voice carrying a wisdom that transcended simple reassurance. "Perhaps some things are meant for a single moment, Amy. A gift, offered and then reclaimed."
