The air in Mama Rose’s kitchen always hung thick with the scent of fried chicken and unspoken truths. It was a familiar embrace, a comfort woven from generations of survival, but lately, it felt more like a shroud. The clatter of her worn wooden spoon against the cast iron skillet was a rhythm I knew as well as my own heartbeat, a sound that had once lulled me into a sense of permanence, of belonging. Now, it just echoed the ceaseless turning of the wheels that kept us bound.

“You quiet tonight, child,” Mama Rose said, her voice a low rumble that always managed to cut through the drone of the cicadas outside. She didn’t look up, her gaze fixed on the browning chicken, but her awareness was a palpable thing, a net that caught every sigh, every shift in my weight.

I traced the condensation on my glass of sweet tea, the sugary liquid doing little to quench the thirst that had settled deep within my spirit. “Just thinking, Mama.”
