Chapter 8
Elder Maeve's Gaze
Wise Elder Maeve observes Leo's increasingly distant behavior. Her knowing eyes suggest she suspects more than she lets on about his absences.
The scent of woodsmoke and damp earth was Leo’s constant companion in the village, a comforting blanket woven from the familiar routines of his human life. He’d always loved it, the way it clung to his clothes and hair, a testament to his belonging. But lately, another scent had begun to mingle with it, a wilder, richer aroma that only he seemed to detect – the musky tang of the other realm, the earth-and-ozone perfume of the Chromatic Beasts. It was a fragrance that whispered of scales and shadows, of eyes that glowed with ancient light, and it tugged at him with an irresistible pull.
He found himself standing at the edge of the village, ostensibly helping to mend a fence, but his gaze drifted towards the dark line of the Whispering Woods. Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of a life well-lived, sat on her usual bench outside her cottage, her gnarled hands busy with a basket of herbs. Her presence was a steady anchor, a reminder of the world he knew, the world he was slowly, terrifyingly, beginning to outgrow.
Leo’s heart thudded a nervous rhythm against his ribs. He’d been late for supper again last night. He’d promised himself he wouldn’t be, not after the stern but gentle lecture from his mother, the worried frown on his father’s face. But the lure of the vibrant, untamed world beyond the shimmering gateway had been too strong. Kael had been demonstrating a new hunting technique, a breathtaking display of speed and controlled ferocity that had left Leo breathless with admiration. And Lyra… Lyra had shared a story of the Sunstone Peaks, of creatures that sang with light, and Leo had felt a longing so profound it had ached in his bones.
