The scent of pine and damp earth clung to Leo’s fur, a stark contrast to the familiar, comforting aroma of woodsmoke and baking bread that usually greeted him as he neared his village. He paused at the edge of the Whispering Woods, the late afternoon sun painting long shadows across the clearing. His heart, a frantic drum against his ribs, beat a rhythm of fear and exhilaration. He was Leo, the boy who’d vanished for a day, and he was also… something else. Something magnificent, something terrifying, something he was still struggling to comprehend.

He touched his snout, the sleek, obsidian scales cool beneath his fingertips. His claws, sharp and formidable, flexed instinctively. He willed the change, picturing the shift, the receding of his horns, the softening of his jawline, the shrinking of his powerful frame. It was a mental exertion, a draining process that left him feeling weak and disoriented. When he finally opened his eyes, he was Leo once more, though the phantom weight of his monstrous form lingered, a constant, humming presence beneath his skin.
