Chapter 17
Rallying the Realms
Leo, with Lyra's help, works to unite the disparate factions of the monster realm and convince his village of the shared threat.
The air in the cavern thrummed with a nervous energy, a low hum that vibrated through Leo’s very bones. Lyra, her scaled hide shimmering under the phosphorescent glow of the cave walls, stood beside him, a silent pillar of support. Around them, a motley assembly of monsters shifted and grumbled. There were the towering, moss-covered Groknars, their voices like the grinding of stones; the sleek, obsidian-skinned Vesperians, their eyes like chips of moonlight; and the feathered, bird-like Aerions, their chirps and whistles a constant, restless murmur. Each faction, a world unto itself, had sent representatives, but the unity Leo craved felt as distant as the stars.
“They’re afraid,” Lyra murmured, her voice a soft rasp against the cacophony. “The Shadow Blight… it touches everything. Even here.”
Leo nodded, his own monster form feeling strangely inadequate against the sheer weight of their apprehension. He was still so new to this, to being a creature of horns and shadow, yet the responsibility pressed down on him with the force of a collapsing mountain. He’d spent weeks, then months, navigating the intricate dance of his dual life. Days in his village, feigning normalcy, helping Elder Maeve with chores, enduring the playful jabs of his childhood friends. Nights, or rather, the hours when the moon was high and his village slept, he’d slip through the hidden passage, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, to the vibrant, dangerous beauty of the monster realm.
