The last rays of the sun, like spilled honey, painted the undersides of the leaves in hues of amber and rose. Char's Mom paused, her breath catching in her throat, not from exertion, but from a sudden, overwhelming wave of doubt. The woods, which had seemed so inviting, so full of promise just hours before, now felt vast and indifferent, a silent, watchful entity. The familiar chirping of birds had dwindled to a few hesitant calls, and the rustling of unseen creatures in the undergrowth seemed to amplify with the encroaching darkness.

She hugged herself, a small, instinctive gesture against a chill that had nothing to do with the cooling air. Loneliness, a guest she hadn't invited and certainly didn't welcome, settled heavily upon her shoulders. It was a different kind of loneliness than she sometimes felt in the quiet house, a comfortable solitude punctuated by the knowledge of Char’s presence, of the life she’d built. This was a stark, unyielding isolation, a feeling of being utterly adrift in a sea of green and shadow.

Her gaze swept over the dense wall of trees, each one a silhouette against the fading sky. The ancient oak, her last recognizable landmark, stood a distant memory now, swallowed by the deepening twilight. The map, clutched in her hand, felt less like a promise and more like a taunt. Its cryptic lines and faded symbols, once vibrant with potential, now seemed to mock her with their ambiguity. What had she been thinking? Trading the warmth of her hearth, the predictable rhythm of her days, for this… this uncertainty?
