Chapter 7
A Test of Courage
A narrow, rickety bridge spans a small ravine. Char's Mom, usually cautious, feels a surge of determination. She crosses, proving to herself that she can face her fears for the sake of the quest.
The forest floor, once a familiar carpet of fallen leaves and moss, now felt like a strange, untrodden land beneath Char's Mom's worn boots. Each rustle of unseen creatures, each sigh of the wind through the ancient trees, was a whisper of the unknown, a gentle prod from the world urging her onward. The path, if it could even be called that, had dwindled to a faint deer trail, weaving through a dense undergrowth that tugged at her skirt and snagged at her hair. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles, hummed with a primal energy that both thrilled and unsettled her.
She paused, taking a deep, steadying breath. The dappled sunlight, filtering through the impossibly tall canopy, painted shifting patterns on the forest floor, like secrets being revealed and then quickly concealed. Her heart, which had been thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs, began to find a steadier beat, a more resolute tempo. The map, clutched tightly in her hand, felt less like a fragile piece of parchment and more like an extension of her own will. Its faded lines and cryptic symbols, once a source of bewilderment, now seemed to speak a language she was beginning to understand, a language of courage and possibility.
Ahead, the trees thinned, revealing a sudden, unexpected drop. A small ravine, no wider than a few strides, sliced through the landscape, its shadowed depths a stark contrast to the sunlit forest. And spanning this chasm, like a fragile thread spun by some giant spider, was a bridge. It was a precarious thing, fashioned from rough-hewn logs lashed together with what looked like ancient rope. Some of the planks were missing, leaving dark gaps that hinted at the ground far below. The logs themselves were slick with moss, and the ropes sagged ominously, threatening to give way with the slightest weight.
