The edge of the woods, once a familiar boundary to her world, now felt like a gaping maw, a verdant invitation to a realm she had only ever glimpsed from her kitchen window. Char's Mom stood at the threshold, the crumpled map clutched in her hand, its ink-stained lines a stark contrast to the living tapestry of green before her. The air here was different, thicker, carrying the scent of damp earth, decaying leaves, and something else… something wild and untamed. A shiver, not entirely of cold, traced its way down her spine. This was it. The first step.

She took a deep breath, the scent filling her lungs, a strange mix of apprehension and exhilaration. The woods were denser than she had imagined, the trees crowding together, their branches interwoven like the gnarled fingers of ancient giants. The map, a fragile relic of a forgotten hand, lay open in her palm. The first clue, a series of delicate, looping lines beside a crudely drawn oak leaf, seemed impossibly vague. "Where the sun sleeps and the roots drink deep," it read, the faded ink a testament to its age. Where did the sun sleep in a place where light barely penetrated? And what roots didn't drink deep? It felt like a riddle designed to keep her out, a guard dog of puzzles for a treasure she wasn't meant to find.
