The air inside the cave was cool, a damp kiss against Char’s Mom’s skin after the exertion of squeezing through the narrow opening. Her flashlight beam, a wavering finger of light, danced across the rough-hewn walls, revealing nothing but the silent, ancient stone. Disappointment, a cold, heavy cloak, began to settle over her shoulders. She’d envisioned glittering gold, chests overflowing with jewels, a tangible reward for her journey into the unknown. But as her light swept across the floor, it caught on something that wasn't rock.

It was a box. Not a grand, ornate chest, but a simple, beautifully carved wooden box, nestled in a small alcove. The wood was dark, smooth to the touch, and etched with intricate patterns that seemed to mimic the swirling lines of the map. A pang of curiosity, sharp and sudden, cut through her weariness. This was it, she felt it. This was the treasure.

With trembling fingers, she lifted the lid. No clinking coins met her ears, no dazzling sparkle greeted her eyes. Instead, the box was filled with what looked like… notebooks. Dozens of them, bound in worn leather, their pages yellowed with age. A faint, sweet scent, like dried flowers and old paper, wafted from within. Beside the stack of journals lay a single, smooth, grey stone, polished to a soft sheen, as if it had been held and rubbed by countless hands.
