The air in our bedroom, once thick with the comforting scent of Arthur’s aftershave and the faint perfume of my own, now held the sterile emptiness of a place being systematically dismantled. Boxes, stark and brown, began to colonize the space, each one a silent testament to the life we had built, a life that was now being carefully, painfully, packed away. It felt like I was excavating a tomb, unearthing relics of a love that had long since turned to dust.

I picked up a framed photograph from the dresser. Arthur and I, younger, beaming, our wedding day etched forever in silver gelatin. Thirty years. Thirty years of shared laughter, whispered secrets, and the quiet rhythm of two lives intertwined. We had weathered storms, celebrated triumphs, and grown old, or so I thought, together. Now, the glint of the silver frame felt like a cruel mockery, reflecting the fractured image of what I believed to be true.

The worn leather armchair in the corner, where Arthur used to read his newspapers, his brow furrowed in concentration, now sat empty, a gaping void.
