The word itself felt like a stone in my mouth, heavy and rough. *Divorce.* It wasn't a word I’d ever imagined uttering, not in a million years, not after thirty years of shared laughter, shared tears, shared everything. It was a word that belonged to other people, to stories I’d read or watched, never to my own quiet, comfortable life. But here it was, a stark reality, a precipice I was forced to stand at, the wind whipping around me with the chill of a future I hadn't planned.

Arthur had left the day before, his suitcase packed with a practiced efficiency that now struck me as chillingly familiar. He’d been so eager for this assignment, so full of promises about reconnecting, about how much he’d miss me. I’d believed him, of course. Why wouldn't I? For thirty years, Arthur Vance had been my anchor, my safe harbor, the steady rhythm of my days. The island, with its exotic allure and professional challenge, had seemed like another chapter in our shared adventure, not the beginning of its end.

But the whispers had started, small, insidious things that grew louder with each passing day he was away. The late-night calls he’d dismissed as work, the guarded way he’d held his phone, the subtle shift in his tone when I asked about his days. It was Sarah who first planted the seed of unease, her brow furrowed with concern. "Are you sure everything's alright, El?" she'd asked, her voice gentle. "He seems… a bit distant." I'd brushed it off, blaming the miles, the time difference, the stress of his new project. I was a fool, a trusting, naive fool.
