The air in the studio, once thick with the comforting scent of turpentine and linseed oil, now felt thin, brittle. Elara traced the cool, smooth surface of her unfinished canvas, her fingers lingering on the impasto strokes that depicted Kai’s smile. It was a smile that had become her anchor, a beacon in the fog of her past. But lately, a different kind of fog had begun to creep in, not around her, but between her and Kai. It was a fog born of silence, of words unsaid, and of a growing, gnawing suspicion that had taken root in the fertile soil of her deepest fears.
Kai had been quiet for days. Not the comfortable, contemplative silence she’d come to cherish, but a strained, distant quiet. His usual easy laughter was muted, his gaze often drifting past her, as if searching for something he couldn’t quite find. Elara, ever attuned to the subtle shifts in his mood, felt it like a physical ache. She’d tried to break through, to coax the familiar warmth back into his eyes, but her efforts felt clumsy, her words hollow.
“Kai,” she’d ventured yesterday, her voice barely a whisper as he sat sketching by the window, the late afternoon sun casting long, emaciated shadows across the room. “Is everything alright?”
