Chapter 5
Defining Limits, Shaping Trust
The team intensifies their investigation into the thermal anomaly, uncovering a micro-void at the lattice node through advanced imaging. Marcus and Dr. Reed debate repair strategies and documentation for the upcoming review. Sophia convenes a rehearsal session, steering the narrative toward transparency and control. As the cross-agency panel nears, the team prepares to demonstrate both the metamaterial's strengths and the rigor of their process, aware that how they address weakness will define the project's future.
Marcus Vance arrived before dawn, energized by urgency. He prepped the main lab for a round of ultrasonic and x-ray imaging on the flawed wing node, knowing the clock was ticking for the panel review. Dr. Evelyn Reed joined him, her notes annotated with potential causes and mitigation paths. They spoke little at first, attention narrowed to the grayscale swathes appearing on the monitor—until, at last, a thin crescent of dark registered along the lattice core.
“Micro-void,” Dr. Reed confirmed, tracing the anomaly with a stylus. “Probably a byproduct of rapid thermal cycling. We’ll need to characterize this—size, propagation risk, and repair options.”
Marcus nodded, already running calculations. “If we show this mode can be detected early and corrected in situ, we’re not just admitting a vulnerability—we’re owning the solution. But it means building a repair protocol and stress-testing it before the panel.”
